Moving from a large company like PayPal to a fintech startup changed how I think about engineering.

I spent about three and a half years on the payments team at PayPal. There, I learned about reliability, scale, review culture, operational discipline, and the importance of fitting changes into large existing systems.

In a large company, roles and responsibilities are often clearer. Teams own specific areas. Processes are more mature. Design reviews, code reviews, testing, release processes, and operational practices are already established.

That environment is great for developing depth. You can spend time understanding a specific domain or system deeply. You also learn how carefully changes need to be made in large-scale systems.

A startup is very different.

The scope becomes broader. You may work across app, web, backend, partner integrations, support tooling, analytics, and internal tools. Requirements may be ambiguous. You often need to clarify the problem while building the solution.

In a large company, the work may often be about implementing a specific part correctly. In a startup, you may also need to ask what should be built, how much should be built, whether it should be built now, and how it will be operated after release.

That can be challenging, but it is also a great growth opportunity.

One of the biggest differences is the breadth of ownership.

You are not only responsible for writing code. You also need to think about user experience, external API limitations, support workflows, monitoring, debugging, and how the system behaves after release.

In a startup, shipping a feature is not just about whether the implementation works. Can users understand it? Can support explain it? Can operations handle edge cases? Can engineers debug it later? Can the system evolve without becoming fragile?

These questions become part of the engineering work.

The foundation I learned at PayPal has been very useful in a startup environment. Concepts like state management, failure behavior, external system consistency, and careful review are important regardless of company size.

But startups also require speed. You may not have time to design the perfect system upfront. That makes judgment important. Where should you invest in robustness? Where should you start simple? What needs to be correct from day one, and what can evolve later?

That balance is difficult.

You need the discipline of a large company and the speed of a startup. You need to think about future scale without overengineering the first version. You need to move quickly without ignoring quality.

That balance is one of the most interesting parts of startup engineering.

AI makes this even more important. As AI increases implementation speed, engineers need stronger judgment about what to build, where the risks are, and how the system will be operated.

The biggest lesson I learned from moving from PayPal to a fintech startup is that engineering is not only about writing code.

It is about moving the product forward, creating systems that help the team move faster, and reducing the complexity between users, operations, and technology.

That broader ownership is what makes the work challenging and meaningful.
